Norman Walter Gerou, age 89, of Escanaba passed away Thursday, May 3, 2012 at the Marquette General Hospital following a brief illness.



Norman was born April 14, 1923, the son of Walter and Lila (Edberg) Gerou in Perkins, Michigan. Norman enlisted in the U.S. army soon after World War II broke out. He served in the European Theatre including the landing on the beaches of Normandy. Norman made the military his career. He also served in the Korean Conflict and later in the Vietnam War. He obtained the rank of Staff Sargent and was awarded numerous medals of which he was always too shy to talk about.



When his military career was over he moved to San Francisco where he became the Chief of Security of the San Francisco Mint, obtaining the rank of Lieutenant and retiring in 1984.



Norman was a voracious reader from the time he was a boy. He also spent many nights on his computer researching various things for himself and others. He loved children, especially those who needed a helping hand, from a band aid to school supplies and clothing. He was very generous to all of his family members and was very respected and loved by all who knew him.



Survivors include two sisters, Judith Kolich of Escanaba and Sylvia Peyton of Escanaba; nieces Renee (Jerry) Wood and Sharon (Jeff) Taylor; nephews Greg (Ilona) Gerou, Kirk Gerou, Tim (Vicki) Gerou, and Kent (Beth) Peyton; great nieces Megan Gerou, Elizabeth Taylor, Jenny Fong; great nephews Matt (Katie) Miller, Jason Gerou, Jacob (Janel) Peyton, Will (Abbey) Peyton; five great great nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Ivan Gerou and two infant twin siblings, Glen and Gloria Gerou.



The family will receive friends on Monday, May 7, 2012 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Skradski Family Funeral Home in Escanaba. Military Honors will be presented by the Rapid River American Legion Post 301 at 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, May 8 at 10:00 AM at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Perkins with Rev. Fr. Jacek Wtyklo officiating. Interment will follow at the Perkins Cemetery. A luncheon will be served following the interment in the church fellowship hall. The family respectfully requests that memorial contributions in Normanís name be directed to the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight. Envelopes can be obtained at the funeral home.
