Richard Rose

Died Jan. 21 2004

Richard “Deak” Francis Rose , 74, Escanaba, Passed away on Tuesday, January 21,2004 at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility following a lengthy illness.

He was born on February 5,1029 in Gladstone, the son of George E. and Bertha M. (Martin) Rose. He attended All Saints Catholic Grade School and graduated from Gladstone High School in 1947. He Played on the undefeated 1946 Gladstone Braves football team, which won the U.P. championship.

A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served with the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953, and was honorably discharged. He received several awards; the Korean Service Medal, two Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal and the Army Occupation Medal (Japan).

Following his discharge he was employed by Northwestern Veneer and Plywood Co., Gladstone; and then in Later years the Birdseye Veneer Co., Escanaba. Richard worked as a Stock Grader for both businesses.

Enterprising as a young man, Richard worked with several logging jobs and his Fish Box Co. supplying wooden fish boxes to area fisheries. Building these fish boxes, Richard began with logs he sawed into lumber, which he then assembled into boxes.

He was a past member of All Saints Catholic Church in Gladstone and St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Escanaba.

Richard enjoyed going to camp, cutting firewood and hunting with his brothers and nephews at the family camps in Cornell. Richard always loved cats, one of his favorites was back in the family home in Gladstone names “PurLoo”.

He was preceded in death be his parents; one sister; Marie Piazza; brother-in-law: Leon Piazza; one sister-in-law: Dorothy Rose; one nephew: Joseph Rose.

Richard is survived by two brothers: Martin Rose, James (Luella) Rose; two sisters: Ethel (Ed) Collegnon, Phyllis O’Donnell all of Escanaba; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Sunday from the Skradski-Boyce Funeral Home in Escanaba from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, with Military rites performed by the Delta County Veterans Council at 6:40 PM and Parish Prayers at 7:00 PM.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Richard Rose will be held Monday at 11:00 AM at St.Thomas the Apostle Church with Fr. Rick Courier officiating. A lunch will follow in the church hall. The burial is at the Fernwood Cemetary.
