Rev. Clifford C. Peterson

Rev. Clifford C. Peterson, age 90, of 6163 County 513 T Road; Rapid River (Stonington area), died peacefully at home Friday morning, May 28th, 2004.

He was born July 24th, 1913 in Center City, Minnesota, the son of Swedish parents, August and Carolina (Halvorson) Peterson. After his high school graduation, “Cliff” began his education to the Lutheran ministry at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN, and later continued his education at the University of Minnesota, University of Michigan, Menninger Institute in Topeka, KS, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and the Augustana Theological Seminary in Rock Island, ILL. , where he was ordained to the ministry in 1943.

His brother, Rev. Harold Peterson, officiated at the marriage to his wife, the former Elizabeth Millward June 22nd, 1946 in Marquette, MI and she has been a loving and devoted wife. Together, they had a wonderful and interesting journey through life.

Rev. Clifford Peterson’s parish ministry included the First Lutheran Church of Gladstone from 1943 to 1958 and he also served the Bethany Lutheran Church in Perkins for a period of time. He was later a pastor at All Saints Church in Kansas City, Kansas from 1958 until 1975, and retired to his home,  “Green Treasures”, in Stonington in 1975 where he has resided since.

His interests included elder hostel travels, reading, and spending time at his beloved home in Stonington. In addition, he assisted other clergy and churches  in the area when asked and when appropriate to do so, including Trinity Lutheran Church in Rock, Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid River, Trinity Lutheran Church in Stonington, and the Isabella Lutheran Church. He was also proud to assist the AA organization in Gladstone for many years.

Rev. Peterson was known as a friendly and energetic man with a broad smile and he had the ability to engage people with a positive attitude whether in person or in a letter or a quick handwritten note. He will be fondly remembered by many people.

Rev. Clifford Peterson’s survivors include: His beloved wife, Elizabeth

3 Sons-Timothy (Marge) Peterson of Hastings, MI; Gregory (Penny) Peterson of Kansas City, KS; Robin “Rob” (Lynn) Peterson of Sturgeon Lake, MN

5 grandchildren, Emily King, Jennifer Quick, Rebecca Furguson, Luke Peterson, and Hillary Peterson

2 great-grandchild, Harrison and Adelle Quick and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jory Drew Peterson in 1952,  three brothers, Harold, Phillip, and John Peterson, and by a sister, Emily.

The family of Rev. Clifford C. Peterson will receive friends on Monday, June 7th, at the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. . Services celebrating Rev. Peterson’s life will follow on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church with Rev. James Holmberg officiating. Luncheon will follow services in the Church Fellowship Hall. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery; Marquette. The family respectfully requests memorials in his behalf be directed to the family for a memorial fund to be established at a later date dedicated to mental health. The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Peterson family.
