Walter Johnson

Walter C. Johnson, 87, of 801 Montana Avenue, Gladstone, died Tuesday June 1, 2004 at the Evergreen Retirement Community in Oshkosh, WI.

Walter was born June 11, 1916 in Gladstone, MI, the son of Edward and Signe (Johnson) Johnson, who preceded him in death.  Walter attended the Gladstone school system and in the early 1940’s enlisted in the United States Army.  Walter served his country during WWII as a military policeman.  Following the military, Walter came home to run the Star Market Grocery with his mother Signe. Walter married his loving wife Helen (Bier) Johnson on June 9, 1949.  Together Walter and Helen made their home in Gladstone and ran the Star Market until Walter’s retirement in 1975.  Walter and Helen remained in Gladstone until November of 2000 at which time they relocated to Oshkosh Wisconsin and remained there until present day.  Walter was a member of the Gladstone American Legion, The Gladstone Yacht Club, The Gladstone Golf Club and the Delta County Ham Radio Club.  He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Associated Grocers.  His hobbies included, bowling, golfing and the ham radio.  Walter and Helen also enjoyed spending their winter months in Gulf Shores Alabama.     

 In addition to his parents Edward and Signe, Walter is preceded in death by 1 brother, Jonas Johnson in April of 1973, and a sister-in-law, Frances Johnson. 

 Survivors include:  Walter’s wife of 54 years,  Helen Johnson of Oshkosh, WI

 2 Daughters:  Linda (John) Dittburner of Oshkosh, WI

 Karen Wicks of Coldwater, WI

2 Grandchildren:  Andrew (Stephanie) Dittburner of LaCrosse, WI

Matthew Dittburner of Oshkosh, WI

1 Nephew:  David Johnson of Farmington Hills, MI

And many cousins. 
Family will receive friends on Friday from 3:00PM to 6:00PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone.  Military rites honoring Walter will be held by the Gladstone American Legion August Mattson Post #71 at 5:45PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral service celebrating the life of Walter C. Johnson will follow military rites on Friday at 6:00PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone with Pastor Paul Strom of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Menominee officiating. Luncheon will follow funeral services at the First Lutheran Church fellowship hall in Gladstone. Burial will be at the Fernwood Cemetery. The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Johnson Family with arrangements.
