Leonard L. "Nook" Nelson, Jr., age 72, of 155 29th Street; Gladstone died Friday, June 12, 2004. "Nook" was born July 9th 1931 in Escanaba, the son of Leonard Sr. and Vivian (Caswell) Nelson and lived in the Rapid River area with his family and was a 1950 graduate of the Rapid River High School. He served with the US Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean Conflict and upon his honorable discharge, he relocated to Gladstone where he has resided since.
Nook Nelson retired in 1998 after 33 years of service with Mead Westvaco Paper Company. He was a member of the Congregational Church of Rapid River and the Rapid River American Legion Walter W. Cole Post #301 and in his leisure, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. Leonard was known as a gentleman with simple tastes and his nieces and nephew always held a special place in his in his heart.
Leonard "Nook" Nelson’s survivors include:
1 Brother- Donald Nelson of Rapid River
2 Nieces- Connie (Mark) Lentz of Fond du Lac, WI; Helen (Russell) Gies of Wolcott, CO
and numerous cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his nephew, Dean Nelson.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 24th, 2004, at the Congregational Church in Rapid River from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Services celebrating the life of "Nook" Nelson will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Congregational Church with Rev. William Rafuse officiating. Luncheon will follow services in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be next to his parents in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells. The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Nelson family.
