William Smith

William G. “Foo” Smith Sr., age 77, of 1401 North 23rd Street, Lot 111, Escanaba died Friday evening July 23, 2004 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness. William was born December 7, 1926 in Gladstone the son of Roger L. and Esther (Anderson) Smith. He was raised in Gladstone and was a 1943 graduate of Gladstone High School. Following graduation he served in the U.S. Navy during WW II from 1944 to 1946. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy he returned to Gladstone where he lived until 1999 when
he moved to Escanaba. He married the former Louise B. Gamache on August 2, 1947 and she preceded him in death on June 15, 1989. William was a brake man and switchman for the Soo Line Railroad for 35 years until he retired in 1987.

William was a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church and a former member of the Gladstone American Legion Post #71 of which he held several offices. He was involved with the Delta Alano Club in Gladstone and he enjoyed playing cribbage, working crossword puzzles, traveling and listening to the Barbershop Singers. He loved to spend quality time with his
family.

3 Daughters:Diane M. (David) Lambert of Gladstone, Patricia A. Pepin of Escanaba
Mary C. (Josh) Dawson of Gurnee, IL

1 Brother:James A. (Karen) Smith of Bolingbrook, IL

1 Sister:Winifed Phillips of Spokane, WA

Several grandchildren and great grandchildren
Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins

In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by his brother Leonard.

William’s family will receive friends on Tuesday from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at Christ The King Lutheran
Church in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of William G. Smith Sr. will follow at 6:00 P.M.
at Christ The King Lutheran Church with Rev. Peter Andersen officiating. Luncheon will follow services in the church fellowship hall. Entombment will be on Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. in the Gardens of Rest Mausoleum with Gladstone American Legion Post #71 Military rites.
