Rene Joseph Maskart age 95, of 2000 Lake Shore Drive (Condominium I) died Saturday, September 11th, 2004 at the Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba where he was a patient for the previous eleven months. Rene was born April 18th, 1909 in Belgium, the son of August and Euphrasie (Matthews) Maskart and immigrated to the United States in 1911 at age two with his parents, settling in the Kipling-Gladstone area.
He attended All Saints School and as a young man was employed for the “Buck-Eye Veneer Co.” in Gladstone. However, Rene was self-employed most of his working life, and became well know in the Upper Peninsula as a contractor for moving homes and other large construction items. In addition, he enjoyed marketing and selling Christmas trees at his previous long-time residence on North 9th Street in Gladstone for over 50 years.
Rene was a member of All Saints Church of Gladstone and a 55 year member of the Gladstone Lions Club where he received the Prestigious “Melvin Jones Fellow Award” by the Lions International Foundation for his humanitarian services. He was a former member of the Gladstone Golf Club and the Gladstone Yacht Club. Rene enjoyed playing cards, and was a member of some of Gladstone’s “smear” leagues.
Rene J. Maskart’s survivors include:
his loving wife, the former Luella Gereau whom he married December 28th, 1939 at St.
Joseph Church in Perkins.
2 Sons- Douglas (Joyce) Maskart of Seattle, Washington, David (Paula) Maskart of Gladstone
2 Daughters-Cherie (Robert) Winchester of Grand Rapids, MI, Diane (Scott) Apelgren of Rochester, Minnesota
10 Grandchildren- Aaron and Natanya Maskart, Matthew Maskart, Leah Lesnieski, Marc Maskart,Robert Winchester, Jr., Renee Dowdy, Bradley Apelgren, Danielle Schlichenmeyer, and Dana Apelgren 3 Great-grandchildren- Carson and Kate Winchester and Lauren Dowdy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Alphonse
Maskart, and by one sister, Leah Crandall.
The family of Rene J. Maskart will receive friends on Thursday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at All Saints Church in Gladstone with Rev. Fr. Arnold Grambow officiating. Luncheon will follow services in the Church Fellowship Hall. Burial will be in the Fernwood Cemetery: Gladstone. |
