John Miller

John S. “Jack” Miller, age 91, of 7866 Cleveland St. (P.O. Box 9-A); Rapid River, died Saturday, September 11th, 2004 at home following a lengthy illness.

Jack was born January 2nd, 1913 in Rapid River, the son of William J. Miller and the former Elizabeth Hruska. He graduated Rapid River High School, the Delta County Normal, and had attended Northern Michigan University. He married the former Vivian Thibault in 1932 and she preceded him in death November 22nd, 1990.

Jack retired in May of 1976 as Postmaster of Rapid River. He and his wife are most remembered, however, as founders and owners and operators of “Jack’s Restaurant” in Rapid River which they began in 1943. After their retirement, they turned the business over to their son, Jack. “Jack’s Restaurant” is currently owned and operated by the founders’ grandsons, Jon and Jeff, and the business continues strong after 61 years.

Jack Miller was a member of St. Charles Church of Rapid River and was a former member of the American Legion, having served in the US Marines during World War II.

He was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus, Escanaba Elks Lodge #354, Rapid River Fire Department, National Association of Postmasters and the League of Postmasters. Jack had also been a charter member of the Escanaba Lions Club and a long-time member of the Rapid River Lions Club.

Jack Miller’s survivors include:

2 Sons-John T. “Jack” (Jean) Miller of Rapid River, Richard L. (Rosemarie) Miller of Rapid River

1 Daughter- Mary (James) Decremer of Rapid River

10 grandchildren and 10 grandchildren.

He also leaves to survive his little dog, “Pepper”.

In addition to his parents and his adored wife, Vivian, Jack was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Miller and William Miller, Jr. , and by two sisters, Elizabeth Short and Marion Olson.

Public visitation for John S. “Jack” Miller will be held on Wednesday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Upon Jack’s request, private services for children and grandchildren only will follow at 5:30 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone on Wednesday. Burial will be next to his beloved wife at Rapid River Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials in his behalf be directed to the Rapid River Scholarship Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the Skradski Funeral Home.
