Elaine M. Nelson, age 73, of 609 South 17th Street, Escanaba, died Thursday afternoon September 9, 2004, at the home of her daughter in Escanaba, surrounded by her family.
Elaine was born July 6, 1931, in Escanaba, the daughter of Benjamin and Laura (Robitaille) Nelson and was raised in the Soo Hill area. Elaine spent many years in the Schaeffer/Bark River area before relocating to Gladstone where she spent the last 20 years before recently moving in with her daughter Debbie due to her declining health. Throughout Elaine’s life she worked as a cook at many different establishments, which include, Potvin’s in Schaeffer, Pioneer Motor Inn in Escanaba, The Stagecoach in Gladstone, Grandma’s Restaurant in Rapid River, and the Delta Pub in Gladstone where she was known for her spectacular pizza crusts. In the years past, Elaine also owned and operated the Coffee Cup Restaurant located at the intersection of Ludington Street and Stephenson Avenue in Escanaba. She was known to have enjoyed her work as a cook and received great pleasure from pleasing her restaurant customers. Elaine enjoyed playing darts and especially loved to ride the casino bus to the Chip In Island Resort and Casino.

9 Grandchildren: Jimmy Nelson, Justin Anderson of Escanaba, Ashley Hurkmans of Escanaba, Anthony Hurkmans Jr. of Wisconsin, Thomas (Mary) Hurkmans Jr. of Arizona, Kristina (Gary) Broege of Illinois, Debra (Robert) Brooks of Arizona, Timothy Hurkmans of Illinois and Cassandra Hurkmans of Arizona.
9 Great Grandchildren: Samantha, Victoria, Christopher, Tyler, Brandon, Nathan, Zach, Sidney, and Haley.
Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Elaine is preceded in death by, her parents Benjamin and Laura and 1 sister, Rose.
Family will receive friends on Saturday from 11:00AM to 1:00PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of Elaine M. Nelson will follow on Saturday at 1:00PM, at the Skradski Funeral Home |
