Donald Stevenson

Donald J. Stevenson, age 70, of 6544 Perkins 30.5 Road, Perkins, MI died Sunday morning September 19, 2004 at home following a brief illness.

Don was born December 7, 1933 in Milwaukee the son of Arthur and Margaret (Koltz) Stevenson and relocated to Perkins with his family at the age of 12. He was a 1952 graduate of Perkins High School. Following graduation, Don was drafted and served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958 where he was stationed in Germany. Within two years he rose to the rank of Staff Sargent and he was commended for being an expert rifleman and received a medal of accommodation for his good conduct. Following his service to the Army, Don returned to the Perkins area and in 1959 he married the former Margaret Tardiff at the All Saints Catholic Church in Gladstone. The couple made their residence in Perkins where they raised their six children. Prior to his stroke in 1974, Don operated the Stevenson Service Station, worked in the plumbing and heating business, drove school bus for the Perkins Schools and assisted at Bay de Noc Community College for the vocational educational program in welding. Don proudly served the Baldwin Township area for 44 years. He served in organizations which would include: The Perkins Lion’s Club and the Michigan Township Association. Don was also a past member on the Perkins School Board and was elected Baldwin Township Supervisor from 1976 until present day. Don belonged to the Bethany Lutheran Church in Perkins, and was the active sexton at the Perkins Cemetery.

His hobbies included: Spending time with his grandchildren, visiting with family and friends, and he is noted and remembered for being instrumental in bringing the Green Thumb Program to the Baldwin Township area facilities. Don had a strong sense of compassion for people and the people in his community and will be deeply missed by family and friends.

In addition to his wife Margaret, survivors include:

3 sons: Robert (Kathleen) Stevenson of Farmington Hills, MI, Gregory (Michelle) Stevenson of Perkins, MI, David (Laura) Stevenson of Appleton, WI

3 daughters: Patricia (Lee) Young of Green Bay, WI, Debra (James) Miller of Waupaca, WI, Rebecca (Thomas) Fix of Rhinelander, WI

1 brother: Arthur (Joan) Stevenson of Gladstone, MI

2 Sisters: Evora Schaefer of Gladstone, MI, Betty Lou Knutson of West Allis, WI

12 Grandchildren: Jessica and Ryan Stevenson of Farmington Hills, MI, Jennifer and Andrew Stevenson of Perkins, MI, Remmington, Jared and Isabella Stevenson of Appleton, WI, Stewart, Benjamin, and Elle Miller of Waupaca, WI, Lucas and Madeline Fix of Rhinelander, WI, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Margaret and 1 Sister, Shirley Westland of Rock, MI.

Donald’s family will receive friends on Wednesday from 3:00PM to 6:00PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of Donald J. "Donnie" Stevenson will follow at 7:00PM at the Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Perkins with Pastor Jonathan Schmidt of the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone officiating. Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in Perkins Cemetery.
