Harriet Ruth Goodman, age 86, of 2901 5th Avenue South, Escanaba, Michigan, passed away on Friday, October 1, 2004, of complications from a stroke.
Harriet was born on October 9, 1917, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Otto and Martha (Wixtrom) Goodman. She was a graduate of Gladstone High School, attended Wheaton College, and graduated from Northern Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in teaching. Harriet taught elementary school in various school districts in Michigan before moving to California. Her teaching career included school districts in the Monterey, San Diego, and Sunnyvale areas. Harriet was a dedicated professional who loved her work and was fondly remembered by her many students. She retired in 1974 and relocated to Escanaba.
Harriet’s generous hospitality and sense of style were well known to her relatives and friends. She was devoted to her sister, Carol, who also taught school in California. They loved traveling throughout the country and visiting their many friends and relatives. Harriet also enjoyed reading, gardening, music, photography and corresponding with her friends. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and Delta Kappa Gamma.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Martha Goodman; her sister, Carol; and her step-mother, Marie (Kimber) Goodman. She is survived by an aunt, Helena Wixtrom, and numerous cousins.
The family would like to thank Harriet’s friends Jerry Koenig, Vicki Landers, Ellen Adkins, and Ruth Helwig for enriching Harriet’s life in recent years; her thoughtful caregivers, Shirley and Maggie; and the kind staff at Christian Park Health Center where Harriet was residing at the time of her death.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at the Skradski Funeral Home, 706 Wisconsin Avenue, , Michigan, with visitation preceding the service from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Reverend Scott Harmon will officiate. Burial will be at Fernwood Cemetery. |
