Cecil Mae Greenwood, age 99, of 600 South Maple Street, Piper City, Illinois, and former Rapid River area resident, died October 5, 2004 at the Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka, Illinois following a lengthy illness.
Cecil was born January 21, 1905 in Carbondale, Illinois and during her childhood, Cecil and her family relocated to the Chatham area where her step father worked at the experiment station. Following her residence in Chatham, Cecil and her family moved to the Ensign area where Cecil attended and graduated from the Rapid River High School. After high school, Cecil married Ray Papineau and the couple made their residence in the Rapid River area where they owned and operated the Tourist Café and the Colonial Inn. Ray preceded Cecil in death in 1943. In 1950, Cecil remarried Lee Greenwood and the couple made their home in the Phoenix, Arizona area. Lee preceded her in death in 1985.
Cecil remained in Arizona for 37 years until 1989 when her health began to decline. Due to her declining health, Cecil’s son Alvin helped her to relocate to Illinois where she resided until present day. Cecil enjoyed traveling, going to Las Vegas, sewing and visiting with family and friends. Cecil will be remembered by family and friends as being a hard worker and will be deeply missed.

1 Son: Alvin (Rosanna Nichols) Tennant of Chatsworth, IL
2 Grandchildren: Patsy Reinagle of Rantoul, IL
Nancy Jo Tennant of Oquawka, IL
3 Great Grandchildren: Randall, Rick and Ronald
Also surviving are 5 Great Great Grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Cecil is preceded in death by her husbands, Ray Papineau and Lee Greenwood. 1 Brother: Rosco Parker and many cousins and aunts.
A committal service to honor the life of Cecil Mae Greenwood will be conducted on Saturday at 11:00AM at the Rapid River Cemetery with Rev. William Rafuse of the Rapid River Congregational Church in Rapid River officiating. Luncheon will be provided for friends and family following committal services at the Jack’s Restaurant in Rapid River. |
