Edmund J. “Babe” Waeghe, age 75, of 524 Dakota Ave.; Gladstone died Tuesday afternoon, October 12th, 2004, at home following a 6 month illness.
Babe was born September 19th, 1929 in Detroit, the son of Charles and Amelia Flora (Reubens) Waeghe and moved to Gladstone as an infant with his parents. He was a 1947 graduate of the Gladstone High School and was a lifelong Gladstone area resident.
Babe married the former Bernita T. “Bea” Girard June 25th, 1949 at All Saints Church in Gladstone and she survives.
In his early working years, Babe was employed as a commercial fisherman, for Scott Dairy, and for Clairmont Transfer Co., but his longest place of employment was for Northern Rebuilders Co. in Escanaba. He retired from Northern Rebuilders in 1991 after 43& ? years of dedicated service.
Babe was a member of All Saints Church of Gladstone and a member of the UAW Local #328 of Escanaba. Babe enjoyed the outdoors which included camping, chopping wood, fishing, and in earlier years, ice-skating. In addition, he always enjoyed helping people with any problems or projects when asked. Anyone who knew Babe fondly remembers his avid love of Ford Motor automobiles and products which also included being a Nascar enthusiast. His children remember him as a most supportive and loving father and as a man of common sense and hard work.
In addition to his dedicated and loving wife, Bea, Edmund “Babe” Waeghe’s survivors include: 2 Sons- Michael (Chris Sheetz) Waeghe of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Terry (Regina) Waeghe of Gladstone
3 Daughters- Gloria (Steve) Kohnert of Gladstone, Patty Waeghe of Ford River, Mia (Joe) Maki of Gladstone
2 Brothers-Louis “Butch” (Betty) Waeghe of Gladstone, William “Bill” (Joyce) Waeghe of Gladstone
1 Sister- Irene “Sis” (Don) Weber of Gladstone
10 grandchildren (including a grandson serving with the military in Iraq), 2 great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bob Waeghe; and by a grandson, Nicholas Maki.
Upon “Babe” Waeghe’s request, a private visitation for his wife, children, grandchildren, and siblings with their spouses will be held on Saturday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone with private funeral service also being held on Saturday with Rev. Fr. Arnold Grambow officiating. Burial will be in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery; Wells. The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Waeghe family.
