Robert Walitalo

Robert “Bob” Reino Walitalo, age 63, of 1401 N. 23rd Street Lot #45, Escanaba, died Saturday evening October 23, 2004 at the St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba. 

Bob was born January 8, 1941 in Ontonagon, the son of Reino and Bertha (Heiskinen) Walitalo.  He was raised in the Ontonagon area and attended and graduated from the Ontonagon High School.  Following high school and in November of 1959, Bob joined the United States Air Force and was honorably discharge on November 22, 1963.  In June of 1964, Bob married the former Darlene Spolarich and the couple made their home in Lower Michigan.  The couple stayed in Lower Michigan until relocating back to the Escanaba area in 1971.  Bob worked for the Standard Oil Company from 1977 until acquiring a position at the Mead-Westvaco Paper Corporation in 1980.  Bob later married the former Margaret LaVigne.  He continued to work for Mead-Westvaco until his retirement.  Following his retirement, Bob enjoyed traveling in his motor home and taking trips, in the recent years, to the casino.  Bob belonged to the Mead Sportsman’s Club and enjoyed hunting ,fishing and camping.  He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.  In Bob’s younger years, he enjoyed skiing and worked as a ski patrolman at the Porky Pine Mountains.

Survivors include:

1 Daughter:  Heidi (Brian) Deiter of Ford River, MI

3 Step-Daughters:  Cathy (Scott) Erickson of West Bend, WI, Julie (Randy) Stammer of Black Creek, WI, Kelly (Ronnie) Robinson of Grand Rapids, MI

2 Aunts:  Hulda Peterson of Ontonagon, MI, Delores (Roy) Peltoniemi of Dollar Bay, MI

2 Cousins:  Pat Aho and Danny Polo

7 Grandchildren:  Justin, Brian Jr., and Christin Deiter, Tony Cryderman, Steffin, Cainen, and Megan Robinson

In addition to his parents, Reino and Bertha, Bob was preceded in death by:

1 Son:  Todd Walitalo, his mother and father in laws and several aunts and uncles. 

Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00PM to 6:00PM at the Skradski-Boyce Funeral Home in Escanaba.  Funeral services celebrating the life of Robert Walitalo will be on Thursday, at 11:30AM, at the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Robb Jurkovich officiating.  Committal services and military rites will follow funeral services at the Gardens of Rest Cemetery.  Luncheon will be in the church fellowship hall.  The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Walitalo family with arrangements.
