Ernest “Ernie” H. Heitman, age 84, of 7035 Days River Road; Gladstone, died Saturday morning, November 13th, 2004 at the Lake View Assisted Living in Gladstone where he was a patient since September
Ernie was born November 22nd, 1919 in Marquette, the son of Ernest C. and Emma (Boese) Heitman and was raised in the Marquette area. After his graduation from the John D. Pierce High School in Marquette, he entered the military, having served with the U.S. Army during World War II with the Medical Corps in England.
Following his honorable discharge, Ernie continued his formal education and graduated with a B.S. Degree in electrical engineering from Michigan Technological University in Houghton in 1950. He subsequently relocated to the Gladstone area where he has resided since. He married the former Mary Heynssens-Barron June 10th, 1967 at the St. Joseph Church in Perkins and Ernie and Mary have enjoyed 37 wonderful years together.
Ernie was employed for Harnischfeger Corporation in Escanaba for a period of time and later began his 34 year career with Eaton Yale & Towne, Inc. in Gladstone, retiring in 1984.
He was a faithful member of St. Martin Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rapid River where he served as President of the Congregation and he also served as treasurer of the church for many years.
In addition, Ernie was active on the Brampton Township School Board for an extended period of time.
In his leisure, he enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, working on his computer, building electronic circuitry, surveying, astronomy, working with refrigeration, and listening to country and western music.
Ernie Heitman’s family remember him as a man of few words with a calming personality and as a person who never criticized anyone.
In addition to his devoted and loving wife, Mary, he leaves to survive:

3 Daughters- Mary (William) Quackenbush of Copper Harbor, MI, Joan Giels of Gladstone, MI, Kathleen (Paul) Soucy of Mayville, MI
2 Step-sons; Tim (Linda) Barron of St. Nicholas, Jim (Carolyn) Barron of St. Nicholas
3 Step-daughters; Nancy (David) Skoog of Marquette, Janet (Ray) Stewart of Ripon, WI, Diane (Jim) Berlier of Crystal Lake, ILL
1 Brothers- Marvin (Jackie) Heitman of Marquette
1 Sister- Gertrude Johnson of Minneapolis
16 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy, in 1959; three brothers; Roy, Erwin, and Ellis Heitman, and by two sisters; Irma Plotezka and Hertha Rohl.
The family of Ernest “Ernie” H. Heitman will receive friends on Wednesday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Services celebrating Ernie’s life will follow on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at St. Martin Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rapid River with Rev. Phillip Paustian officiating. Luncheon will follow services in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in the Fernwood Cemetery; Gladstone. The family respectfully requests memorials in his behalf be directed to the St. Martin Evangelical Church in Rapid River. Envelopes will be available at the Skradski Funeral Home or at St. Martin Evangelical Lutheran Church. |
