William H. “Bill” Kaufman, age 85, of 1306 Michigan Ave.; Gladstone, died Sunday evening, October 31st, 2004 at the Christian Park Village in Escanaba where he was a patient since December 15th, 2003.
Bill was born January 15th, 1919 in Chicago, the son of Henry and Edna (Wright) Kaufman and moved to Escanaba at age five with his family. He attended the Escanaba School System and was a 1936 graduate of the Escanaba High School.
Immediately after High School, Bill began his employment with the Escanaba Dairy as a deliveryman and ice cream maker. Except for eight years working in California during the World War II era, he was engaged by the Escanaba Dairy for a total of 48 years. He married a Gladstone native, the former Dorothy A. Ford, August 23rd, 1941 in Yuma, Arizona and they returned to Escanaba in 1949 from California and subsequently relocated to Gladstone in 1950. Even after Bill’s formal retirement, he delivered milk products to the Gladstone Senior Citizen Organization and was employed for a period of time at Jim’s Dairy Queen in Escanaba. Bill was a member of the Escanaba City Basketball Team for many years and is a member of the “Quarterback Club” of Escanaba. He was also active in numerous bowling leagues in the area through the years that bowled at the Midway Bowling Lanes in Gladstone.
He was an active member of the Memorial United Methodist Church of Gladstone and it’s Mens Club and had also served on the church building committee for many years. Bill was known as a kind and considerate man and caring for others came natural to him.
In addition to his devoted and loving wife, Dorothy, of 63 years, Bill Kaufman’s survivors include:

Michael (Jackie) Kaufman of Mio, MI
Ford (Alice Yankovac) Kaufman of Kalamazoo, MI
Jay (Patti) Kaufman of Gladstone
1 Daughter- Laurie Kaufman de la Garza of Gladstone
1 Brother- Robert (Irma) Kaufman of Florida
1 Sister- Kathlyn O’dess of Novi, MI
9 Grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters:
Ethel Mannebach, Mina LaCrosse, Helen Cottle, and by two infant sisters.
The family of William H. “Bill” Kaufman will receive friends on Thursday at the Memorial United Methodist Church of Gladstone from3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Services celebrating Bill’s life will follow on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at the Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Joanne Bartelt officiating Luncheon will follow services in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in the Fernwood Cemetery. The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Kaufman family. |
