John V. Mackie, age 71, of 1202 Montana Ave.; Gladstone, died Thursday morning, January 20, 2005, at Marquette General Hospital where he was a patient for the previous ten days.
John was born September 7th, 1933 in Gladstone, the son of Toivo and Mary (DeWaele) Mackie and was a graduate of the Gladstone High School.
John is a veteran of the US Navy, having served in the military during the Korean Conflict from June 1951 to July 1954, having been stationed at Pearl Harbor on the USS O’Bannon. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Delta County. John was a life-time member of the Escanaba VFW and a member of the Gladstone American Legion August Mattson Post #71.
John had been employed at Marble Arms in Gladstone and later for Harnischfeger Corp. in Escanaba for a number of years. After Harnischfeger’s closure, he relocated to Florida where he worked at a golf course until retiring. He returned to Gladstone three years ago and has since enjoyed many days of golfing with friends. John was also an avid Detroit Lions fan and was known for being kind of heart to family and friends.

17 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren
John was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Gloria Ramos; his parents, Toivo and Ellen Mackie, and Wilho and Mary Anderson; one brother, James Mackie; and one sister, Carol Anderson.
The family of John V. Mackie will receive friends on Monday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Military Rites will be conducted by the Gladstone American Legion at 4:00 p.m. followed by services celebrating John’s life with Rev. Fr. Emmitt Norden officiating. Luncheon will follow services at the Gladstone American Legion. Burial will be in Fernwood Cemetery. The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes are assisting the Mackie family. |
