Vernis J. Hardwick, age 87, of 9284 Highway M-35; Gladstone, died Saturday evening, February 19th, 2005 at home surrounded by loving family members. She was born December 23, 1917 in Naubinway, the daughter of Ruel and Ellen (Moore) Newberry and was raised in Luce County. She married Wellington Sanford and together had lived in the Detroit area for a period of time. They relocated to the St. Jacques area in 1947. Vernis married Melvin F. Hardwick May 4th, 1953 and he survives. They both have lived at their present location since October, 2004.
She was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church of Rapid River and the Rapid River American Legion Auxiliary August Mattson Post #301. Vernis enjoyed quilting, cooking, and traveling but her greatest enjoyment was her family.
In addition to her husband, Melvin, Vernis J. Hardwick’s survivors include:
5 Sons- Darrel (Elizabeth) Hardwick of Tennessee; Dennis (Crystal) Hardwick of Los Angeles, CA; Aaron (Donna) Sanford of Gladstone; Gary (Char Piche) Sanford of Bark River; Melvin (Dee) Sanford of Rapid River
2 Daughters-Connie (Lenny)Fitch of Hyde; Bonnie Couillard of Seattle, WA
1 Brother- Dwayne (Carol) Newberry of Jackson, WI
2 Sisters- Rita (Pat) Phalen of Escanaba; Laurel Fromm of Texas
Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Vernis was preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde, Royal “Jim”, and Basil Newberry.
The family of Vernis J. Hardwick will receive friends on Thursday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with American Legion Auxiliary Rites being conducted at 4:45 p.m.
Services celebrating her life will follow on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid River at 6:00 p.m. with Rev. Stephen Gauger officiating. Luncheon will follow services in the Calvary Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. Burial will be in the Rapid River Cemetery. The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Hardwick family. The Hardwick family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Marquette Home Health Care and Hospice for their kindness and concern during Vernis’s illness, especially Patti, Sr. Dyonne, and Mary Berton, and they also wish to thank a special volunteer, Bev Farrell. |
