Susan M. “Sue” Karnitz Phillips, age 54, of 4433 Deerfield T Lane; Rapid River (Stonington), died Saturday morning, February 5th, 2005, at home surrounded by her loving family.
Sue was born February 12th, 1950 at Francis Hospital in Escanaba, the daughter of Victor and Betty (Blake) Karnitz and was raised in Gladstone and was a 1968 graduated of the Gladstone High School. She married Mark F. Phillips on April 26th, 1969 at All Saints Church in Gladstone and they lived in the Rapid River area for four years. They subsequently relocated to Gladstone and raised their family there. Sue and Mark moved to Stonington five years ago.
Sue attended Bay de Noc Community College and later received her degree in elementary education at Northern Michigan University in Marquette. She began her teaching career as a substitute teacher and continued her love of teaching children at Holy Name High School in Escanaba.
In addition, Sue was a member of the PTO at Jones Elementary School in Gladstone and the Gladstone Youth Wrestling Board. She was also a Girl Scout Leader.
In her leisure, she enjoyed gardening and reading books, and received great pleasure from the water at her home on the bay. Sue’s family will always remember her for her devotion to family with her grandchildren always having a special place in her heart. She will also be remembered as a courageous, graceful, and stylish woman with an upbeat attitude in good times and in bad.
In addition to her loving husband, Mark, and her parents, Victor and Betty Karnitz, of Gladstone, Sue Phillip’s survivors include:

Siblings-MaryJo (Tom) VanHorn of Rapid River; Karen (Gary) LeClaire of Gladstone; Paul (Cindy) Karnitz of Antigo, WI; Nancy (Jim) DeGrand of Gladstone; Patti (Mark) Hager of Gladstone; Sandey (Mark) Hereau of Escanaba; Sara (Bill) Hawker of Lindenhurst, IL
Grandchildren- Jordann Phillips, Brayden and Josie Furchner, and Livana and Darcy Phillips,
and nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family of Sue Phillips will receive friends on Tuesday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at All Saints Church in Gladstone with Rev. Fr. Ron Skufca officiating. Luncheon will follow services in the All Saints Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, Sue’s family respectfully requests memorials in her behalf be directed to the Holy Name School or the Delta County Youth Assistance Program. Envelopes will be available at the Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Delta County. |
