Prudence Couillard VanMill, age 86, 7790 W.5 Road; Rapid River (Ensign), died Wednesday afternoon, February 16, 2005, at St. Francis Hospital In Escanaba where she was a patient since Monday.
Prudence was born August 6th, 1918 in Escanaba, the daughter of Onesime and Yvonne (Brunette) Guindon and was raised in the Flat Rock area. She married Henry “Hank” Couillard in 1936 and together had lived in the Wells and Gladstone areas. He preceded her in death in 1970. Prudence later married Henry “Hank” VanMill in 1974 and they resided on the VanMill family farm in Ensign. He preceded her in death in 1992.
In addition to being an active homemaker, Prudence’s working career included working at Royer Fish Market, Mattson Fruit Market, and as a cook at All Saints School, all in Gladstone.
In addition to her family, Prudence enjoyed gardening, canning, and quilting and she was known to receive great pleasure from feeding all types of wildlife, including deer and birds.

2 Daughters- Gladys Krokstad of Gladstone; Florence Kalishek of Gladstone
2 Step-sons, John (Pam) VanMill of Chicago; Larry (Kay) VanMill of Florida
3 Step-daughters, Patsy (Gene) Spechte of California; Bonnie (Jim) Hill of Wetmore; Mary Lou Heinz of Washington
2 Brothers- Lionel (Elizabeth) Guindon of Pennsylvania; Leonard (Gladys) Guindon of Cornell
5 Sisters- Rita Commet of Escanaba; Agnes McComb of Escanaba; Bertha Blevens of California; Evelyn (Charles “Bill”) Cass of Gladstone; Helen Menard of Chicago
and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was also preceded in death by one brother, Hector Guindon, and by two sisters, Jeanette Swift and Marie Hill.
The family of Prudence Couilllard VanMill will receive friends on Monday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Service celebrating the life of Prudence VanMill will follow on Monday at 6:00 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home with Rev. Fr. Arnold Grambow officiating. Luncheon will follow services in the All Saints Church parish Hall. Burial will be in the Fernwood Cemetery. The Skradski-Boyce Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Couillard and VanMill families. |
