Betty A. Girard, age 77, passed away Tuesday evening, March 29, 2005 at her home in Gladstone. She was born September 4, 1927 in Racine, Wisconsin, the daughter of August and Alice (Johnson) Sass, who preceded her in death. She was raised in Racine and graduated from William Horlick High School in 1945. On November 5, 1949, Betty married her husband, the late Adolph Girard. Together the couple made their way to the Upper Peninsula and eventually made their home in the Gladstone area in the early 1950’s.

Throughout Betty’s life, she worked for several different businesses, including Massey-Harris Corporation, Cloverland College, Wery Luggage, Prudential Insurance Company, Michigan Cooperative Extension Service, and the Dairy Flo in Gladstone. She also worked during city elections. She spent many hours of volunteer time as a room mother, Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader, band chaperone, PTA member and receptionist at the Gladstone Senior Citizens Center. She was a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, State Employee Retirees Association and the Gladstone Senior Center.

Betty’s hobbies included spending time with her grandchildren, volunteer work, communicating with friends and relatives, cooking, and, in her earlier years, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, and accompanying members of the Girard family on log birling trips.

She was a former member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Racine, and a current member of All Saints Church in Gladstone. Betty is fondly remembered as a generous and caring person to all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Ted) Swanson of Perkins and Karen (Terry) Dahl of Gladstone; three grandchildren, Tiffany and Tyler Dahl, and Matthew Swanson; childhood friend Arlene Christensen and aunt Viola Pishny of Racine; sister-in-laws Marguerite Girard, Ione Whitburn and Bea Waeghe; and brother-in-laws Tom Gerovac and Ed Girard. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Gulbrandson, and niece Penny Gulbrandson.

Family will receive friends on Monday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of Betty Girard will follow visitation at 6 p.m at the funeral home, with Rev. Jonathan Schmidt from the First Lutheran Church of Gladstone officiating. Luncheon will follow at the First Lutheran Church fellowship hall. Committal will be in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
