Robert L. “Bob” Sandstrom, age 81, of 428 North Bluff Drive; Gladstone, died Friday morning, March 4th, 2005, at the Iron Mountain Veterans Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Bob was born Feb. 18, 1924 in Detroit, the son of Ernest and Mary (Creten) Sandstrom and at age seven relocated to Gladstone with his family and has resided in Gladstone much of his life. After his 1943 graduation from the Gladstone High School, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged in February of 1946. Bob married the former Mary E. Roberts November 23rd, 1946 in Chicago.
He received a degree in optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry and later graduated form the Michigan State Police Academy in East Lansing and served as State Trooper for many years until his retirement.
Bob was a member of All Saints Church, the Escanaba Disabled American Veterans, and the Gladstone American Legion August Mattson Post #71. In his earlier years, he took pleasure in golfing and bowling, and he especially enjoyed hunting as a past-time. His family remembers him as enjoying nature and he was fond of feeding wildlife.
In addition to his wife, Mary, of 58 years, Robert Sandstrom’s survivors include:
1 Daughter- Sharon (Robert) Turner of Grayson, Georgia
1 Brother-Richard (Pat) Sandstrom of Marquette
1 Sister- Margaret (Jim) Gibbs of Gladstone
1 Granddaughter- Tara Turner of Georgia
and nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents and by three sisters; Alice Dickson, Catherine Richards, and Mary Alice Haglund.
The family of Robert “Bob” Sandstrom will receive friends on Monday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Military Rites will be conducted at 5:45 p.m. by the Gladstone American Legion. Services celebrating Bob’s life will follow on Monday at 6: 00 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home with Rev. Arnold Grambow officiating. Luncheon will follow services at the All Saints Church Parish Hall. Burial will be in the Fernwood Cemetery. The Skradski-Boyce Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Sandstrom family. |
