Ned Short

Ned E. Short, age 88, of 10578 S. 75 Road (P.O. Box 36); Rapid River, died Tuesday, November 15th, 2005, at home following a brief illness.

Ned was born March 28th, 1917 in Rapid River, the son of Alexander and Ruth (Hamilton) Short and was a graduate of the Rapid River High School, Class of 1935. He also attended Bay de Noc Community College at various times in his working life in automotive maintenance and repair.

He married the former Eva L. Thivierge on February 22nd, 1941 and lived all their married life in Rapid River.

Ned owned and operated “Ned’s Service Station” in Rapid River from 1948 to 1979, and the “Rapid River Cedar Yard” from 1948 until 1982.

Having been an active member of St. Charles Borremeo Church of Rapid River, he was involved in many church activities, including being a member of the parish council, the board of trustees, and the chairperson of the building committee.

Ned also participated in many community affairs having been a member of the Rapid River Lions Club, Rapid River Chamber of Commerce, and the Delta County Chamber of Commerce, serving one term on its’ board of directors. Additionally, Ned was a member of the Rapid River Volunteer Fire Dept for 35 years and the Masonville Township Board for 10 years.

In his leisure, he was an avid deer and bird hunter and had a passion for fly fishing, experiencing his first trout catch in 1925 at age eight on the Tacoosh River. He and his wife, Eva, traveled extensively in the United States and spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona

In addition to his loving wife, Eva, Ned Shorts survivors include:

2 Sons-Daniel (Sally) Short of Sunland, CA; Patrick (Mary) Short of Covina, CA

2 Daughters-Mary Ann Hale of Gladstone; Neva Short of Chandler, AZ

3 Brothers-Pete Short of Escanaba; Jim Short of Midland, MI; Owen (Ethel) Short Lady Lake, FL

10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Ned was preceded in death by his parents as well as two brothers, Bob and Joe Short.

The family of Ned Short will receive friends on Friday at St. Charles Church in Rapid River from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at St. Charles Church with Rev. Fr. Jacek Wtyklo and Rev. Fr. Arnold Grambow officiating. Luncheon will follow services in the St. Charles Parish Hall. Burial will be in the Rapid River Cemetery. The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Short Family.
