Frank Carlson

Frank W. Carlson, age 91, of 3162 Co. Rd. 426 24th Rd., Cornell, died Thursday evening December 1, 2005, at his home in Cornell, surrounded by his family.

Frank was born June 9, 1914, in Cornell, the son of Alex and Hilda (Erickson) Carlson. He was raised in Cornell and attended the Cornell schools.  Frank entered the United States Army, serving from 1942 to 1945.  During his service in the military he served with Company D 1st Battalion, 109th Regiment in the European Theatre.  Frank was involved in the forefront of many military campaigns including, “Battle of the Bulge” and the invasion of Germany with the Rhine Campaign.  He was honorably discharged with a number of military medals, citations and awards.  On May 9, 1944, Frank married the former Ellen Porsman in Detroit, MI before being shipped out overseas during the WWII era.  Upon his discharge in 1945, Frank returned to Delta County, residing in Escanaba for a period of time before moving back to Cornell where he and Ellen resided and raised their family until present day.  Frank enjoyed his family as they grew, going on family picnics and family drives, packing his entire family of 8 into the vehicle.  Throughout the years, Frank had been employed for several trucking companies, eventually retiring from Clairmont Transfer in 1976.  His hobbies included, listening to music, watching football, taking scenic drives with his wife Ellen and in his earlier years, hunting and playing his accordion.  He is remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and his love for his family and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.

4 Sons:  Gary (Linda) Carlson of Wausau, WI; Dennis Carlson of Gladstone, MI; Raymond (Mary Lynn) Carlson of Soo Hill, MI; Wendell (Kristen) Carlson of Escanaba, MI

2 Daughters:  Linda (Lee) Carlson of Cornell, MI; Luanne (Steve) Glovacki of Gladstone, MI

1 Sister:  Viola Weins of Powers, MI

1 Brother in law:  Leo Moreau of Escanaba, MI

Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

4 Sisters:  Elsie Kennelly, Vivian Christiansen, Elizabeth Moreau and Fanny Carlson.  
 
Family will receive friends on Monday from 1:00PM to 3:30PM at the Skradski-Boyce Funeral Home in Escanaba.  Funeral services celebrating the life of Frank W. Carlson will follow visitation, at 4:00PM, at the Central United Methodist Church in Escanaba with Pastor Scott Harmon officiating.  Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall.  The Delta County Veteran’s Council will conduct military rites, to honor Frank’s service to his country, on Tuesday, at 10:30AM, at the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells.
