David Mark Maniaci, 52, passed from this life on Thursday, April 20, 2006, at St. Francis Hospital, surrounded by his family. For nearly 50 years, he lived at the family home at 1224 Wisconsin Avenue, in Gladstone. For the past nine months, he resided at the Christian Park Health Care Center in Escanaba.
Mark was born April 14, 1954 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of Dr. George and Lou Maniaci. He graduated from J.F. Kennedy Special Education School and participated in Special Olympics, winning medals in swimming, wrestling and basketball. He was employed by Lake State industries in Escanaba. He also delivered the Action Shopper for many years. His favorite activities included shooting pool at Wally’s, attending Gladstone’s basketball and football games, and singing in the The Remnants Barbershop Chorus. Mark was also a good dancer. Almost everyone who knew Mark was his friend and protector. Mark was the ultimate Green Bay Packers fan, attended several games in recent years. He was a member of the Community Handicap Awareness Team (C.H.A.T.). He was also a member of the Soo Hill Mennonite Church.
Mark is survived by his mother, Lou, from Gladstone; two sisters, Maria of Gladstone, JoAngela of St. Paul, MN; a brother, Steven (Joanna) of the Petoskey area; two nieces, Thelma Clarage of Chicago, IL and Wanita (Tim) Clarage-Shaw of Neenah, WI and two nephews, Charles (Kathy) Clarage of Green Bay, WI and Sam Maniaci of the Petoskey area.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. George D. Maniaci of Gladstone in 1974, and his older brother, Michael of Colorado in 1986.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2006 from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. at the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone with the funeral service immediately following. Refreshments will follow the service in the fellowship hall. A private burial service will be held for the family at a later date. Memorial donations may be directed to the County Special Olympics with envelopes available at the church.
