Jeanette R. Martin, age 82, of 2600 South Hill Road, #19; Gladstone and former Rapid River area resident, died Tuesday, April 4th, 2006 at home following a lengthy illness.
Jeanette was born June 19th, 1923 in Flat Rock (Escanaba Twp.), the daughter of Zenon and Rosana (Miron) Chenier, and was raised in the Flat Rock area and attended school there.
On May 4th, 1946, she married Clarence H. “Pepper” Martin at Holy Family Church in Flat Rock and he preceded her in death on February 13th of this year just three months short of their 60th wedding anniversary.
Together they resided in Escanaba and Lower Michigan for a short period of time before making their home in West Allis, Wisconsin. In 1981, they returned to Delta County and lived in the Rapid River area for 20 years before relocating to their present location over 4 years ago.
In addition to being a governess in Florida in her early working years, Jeanette was employed as a nursing assistant in Powers, MI and Milwaukee, WI and she loved to volunteer for any organization or project that would assist and help people.
Jeanette had an artistic nature which included oil painting and cake decorating. She also enjoyed cooking and the children of her neighborhoods always benefited from the special “treats” that came from her kitchen.
Jeanette is remembered as having a strong religious faith and was a devout member of St. Charles Borremeo Church of Rapid River. She was also a member of the Rapid River American Legion Auxiliary Walter W. Cole Post #301 and the Rapid River Lioness Club.
Jeanette and her loving husband, Clarence, will always be remembered as kind, good and unselfish people and their family will forever hold their memory close to their hearts.

1 Daughter- Pamela (Steven) Nygaard of Gladstone
1 granddaughter- Marissa Rose Nygaard
1 Brother-Joseph (Noelie) Chenier of Escanaba
1 Sister-Bella Jacke of Escanaba
Survivors also include a bother-in-law, Donald (June) Martin, of Osier; sisters-in-law, Blanche Chenier of Escanaba and Jeanette Fraser of Escanaba; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, and her husband, Clarence “Pepper” Martin, Jeanette was preceded in death by 2 sisters; Agnes King and Florence Robitaille; 8 brothers, Alex, Gerald, Oliver, Lawrence, Arthur, Daniel, Ernest, and Henry Chenier; and by 3 infant sisters.
The family of Jeanette R. Martin will receive friends on Friday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 4:00 pm. to 7:00 p.m. Rapid River American Legion Auxiliary Services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Charles Church in Rapid River with Rev. Fr. Jacek Wtyklo officiating. Luncheon will follow services at the St. Charles Church Fellowship Hall. Burial will be in the Rapid River Cemetery.
