Leona Dorothy Michalik, age 84, former resident of 217 Dakota Avenue, Gladstone, passed away Saturday April 29, 2006 at the Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers.
Leona was born March 8, 1922, in Detroit, the daughter of John and Mary (Wiacek) Niewzalek. The former Leona Niewzalek married Alfred Michalik on February 15, 1943 in Valparaiso, Indiana. Alfred preceded her in death on March 4, 1986. Leona and Alfred moved to Delta County in 1956 and together the couple owned and operated the Port Bar, for many years in the Fayette area. Following retirement, Leona and Alfred moved to the St. Jacques area and resided there until Alfred’s death in 1986. In 1987, Leona relocated to Gladstone residing at the Bay View Manor where she was active in the, what is now known as the, 52 Club and also in the Gladstone Senior Center. Leona was a dedicated wife who loved her family. She enjoyed dancing, bowling, fishing, crocheting, bingo and going to the casino.
She survived by:
3 Sons: Alfred (Terrill) Michalik of Gladstone, MI; Dennis Michalik of Marquette, MI; Michael "Jay" (Debbie) Michalik of Florence, Montana
7 Grandchildren: Daniel (Sara) Michalik of Manistique, MI; Kurt (Sandy) Michalik of Wallace, MI; Michelle (Brian) Brown of Gladstone, MI; Audrey (Jeff) Solomon of Rapid River, MI; David Michalik and Stephen Michalik both of Florence, Montana; Nathaniel Michalik
Also surviving are 7 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, John and Mary and her husband Alfred, Leona was preceded in death by: 1 Brother: Emil Niewzalek; 1 Sister: Beatrice DeKarske.
She will be sadly missed by her family and friends
Funeral services celebrating the life of Leona Michalik will be held at the convenience of the Michalik family. Committal will be in the Fernwood cemetery. The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Michalik family with arrangements.
