OBITUARIES

Inez Lindberg
Resided in Kipling, MI
Died May 24, 2007

Inez R. Lindberg, age 90, of 1423 North Lake Shore Drive; Gladstone, (Kipling area) died Thursday morning, May 24th, 2007, at the Lakeview Assisted Living in Gladstone where she resided since June of 2005.

Inez was born November 27th, 1916 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Dona and Agnes (Carlson) Barron and they soon returned to  the St. Nicholas area where Inez went to school until the eighth grade. Her ninth and tenth grade years were spent at St. Joseph’s High School in Escanaba before she graduated from the Rock High School in 1932. She was only 15 years old at that time and because of her youth, she had to wait two more years before being accepted at the Delta County Normal Teachers College. Even then, she had to receive special permission.

A year later, she had her first teaching job at Youngs School in Perkins.  In her early years of teaching, she was at the Maple Ridge Township Schools and at the Kipling School, before going back to Perkins Consolidated Schools from 1943-1946.

During the years of World War II, she went to summer school at Winona State College in Minnesota. It was during one of those semesters she married Walfred J. “Cheese” Lindberg on July 13th, 1944, while he was home on leave from the military service. Walfred later owned and operated “Lindberg Cabins” in Kipling for many years before being owned by his son, John. Walfred “Cheese” Lindberg died February 5th, 1995.

Dissatisfied because she did not have a regular teaching degree, Inez continued to teach and pursue her own education at the same time, taking correspondence courses from Northern Michigan University in Marquette and attending college during the summer months. In 1963, she was awarded a BA in elementary education from NMU. Three years later, she earned her MA from the same university. That year, she was hired by the Escanaba Area Schools to teach at the Cornell School because of her experience in handling multiple-grade classrooms.

She formally retired in 1980 after completing her 45-year career as an educator in Delta County.

Inez is a member of All Saints Church, the Michigan Education Association, and had been a 4-H leader for 15 years.

Inez enjoyed traveling, reading, and doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles in her leisure. She was a soft-spoken women with a shy smile and she will be sadly missed.

Inz Lindberg’s survivors include:
