Evelyn Johnson

Evelyn E. Johnson was born march 28, 1916 in ensign, Michigan.  She was the daughter of Waldemar and Hilma (Magnusson) Anderson.  She married Melvin Jacobsen, a well-known local commercial fisherman, on may 19, 1934 in Gladstone at the German Lutheran church.  She and Melvin had five children: Dolores (Gerald) Bink, Milwaukee; Leon (Susan) Jacobsen, New Berlin, WI; Donna (Fred) Beaudry, Florida; Mary (Richard) Chouinard, Gladstone; and son Michael (Nancie) Tyrone, GA. Who preceded her in death in 1999.  Evelyn is further lovingly survived by 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Evelyn was from a family of 12 children.  Her living siblings include Hazel Holm, Escanaba; Thora Greenlund, Gladstone; Grover Anderson, Gladstone; Anne Bert, Escanaba; Jane Gardner, Escanaba; and Eileen Schultz from California.  Deceased siblings include Victor Anderson, Detroit; Rose Ericksen, Escanaba; Clara Anderson, Gladstone; James Anderson, Escanaba; and Myron Anderson from Escanaba. 

In addition to her loving parents she is further deceased by her husband Melvin Jacobsen in February 1960.  She married Harold Johnson in 1962 who preceded her in death in June of 1980.

She and Harold resided in Stonington after remodeling the Jacobsen home there.

Evelyn has several grandchildren who have preceded her in death.  They include: infant Timothy Chouinard, Diane Jacobsen, Gerald (Jabe) Bink, and Freddie Beaudry.

Evelyn worked for the Jim Robbins Company in Mt. Clemens and Schusters’ department store in Milwaukee as an interior decorator.  In her younger years she was very active in her children’s activities including Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and the P.T.A.  Her hobbies included gardening, canning baking, cooking, x-country skiing, and painting wild flowers.  Her children and grandchildren fondly remember her homemade bread.

Evelyn was a member of the First Lutheran church in Gladstone; Rapid River and Gladstone senior citizens centers’, AARP, 700 club, Christian Women’s club, American Bible Institute, Oral Roberts University, she also sang for 20 years in the church choir.

Evelyn valued school education and studied to receive her high school diploma in 1975 from the rapid river school.  Evelyn gave thanks and praise to the Lord daily for her family of whom she was very proud.

Due to Evelyn’s failing vision and Parkinson’s disease she recently resided at christian park center, Bishop Noa Home, and Christian Park Village.  Thank you to the staff at Christian Park Village who so lovingly cared for her in her final days.  Memorials may be directed to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.  Envelopes will be available at Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. 

Evelyn’s family will receive friends on Thursday from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone.  Funeral services celebrating the life of Evelyn E. Johnson will follow at 5:00 pm at the Skradski Funeral Home with Rev. Jonathan Schmidt and pastoral intern Jean R. Schmidt of the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone officiating.  Luncheon will follow services will follow services at the First Lutheran Church fellowship hall.  Committal services will be held on Friday at 11:00 am at the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells.  Pallbearers assisting at the cemetery will be Christopher, Michael, and Steven Beaudry, Ed Harris, and Leon and Nicholas Jacobsen.
