Lowell Gustave Burklund, age 84, of 5328 12th Road, died early Tuesday morning October 2, 2007 at his residence in Escanaba surrounded by his family.
Lowell was born September 18, 1923, in Daggett, MI, the son of Seth and Edith (Lindbom) Burklund. In his early teenage years, Lowell and his family relocated to Escanaba where Lowell attended and graduated from the Escanaba Senior High School, class of 1941. Following high school, Lowell enlisted in the United States Army serving with the 87th Reconnaissance Cavalry Troop during WWII. On April 13, 1944, Lowell was joined in marriage to the former Eileen Tryan at the St. Peter’s Church in Columbia, South Carolina. Lowell was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1945, at which time, he and his newlywed returned to Escanaba to make their home and begin their family. Over the years, Lowell was employed, as a mechanic, at Northern Motors in Escanaba, retiring in 1985. After his retirement, Lowell and Eileen enjoyed traveling together throughout the United States and abroad. In his early years, Lowell enjoyed photography and woodworking.
In addition to his loving wife of 63 years, Lowell leaves to survive:
2 Sons: Lowell Burklund Jr. of Gladstone, MI; Jeffrey (Julie Fraley) Burklund of Gladstone, MI
1 Daughter: Karen (Bill) Friedenberg of Milan, PA
6 Grandchildren: Peter; Holly (John); Allison; Chris; Ben; and Brandon
Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, Seth and Edith and brother, Seth Jr.
The Burklund family will receive friends on Friday from 4PM to 5PM at the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Lowell Gustave Burklund will follow visitation, at St. Stephen’s, with Episcopal Missioner Rayford Ray and Rev. Carl Carlson officiating. Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. Contributions in Lowell’s name may be directed to OSF Hospice Care. Envelopes will be available throughout visitation and at the Skradski-Boyce Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Burklund family with arrangements.
