Marjorie Helen Durkin, age 83, of 1200 8th Avenue South passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at the St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.
Marjorie was born May 11, 1924 in Hinsdale, Illinois to Carl and Margaret (Hownitz) Dietchweiler. She was united in marriage to William S. Durkin on August 2, 1947 in Chicago. Two days later on August 4, 1947 William and Marjorie moved to the Escanaba area and Marjorie has remained a resident ever since. Marjorie was a faithful and devoted Catholic. She served as Eucharistic minister at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for 15 years and as a room mother at St. Patrick’s School for 7 years. She was a member and Past President of the Escanaba Woman’s Club. She was also a 2 year treasurer and secretary for the U.P Woman’s Club. Marjorie volunteered her time with the local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for 9 years and worked in the Accounting Department at City Hall in 1969. Marjorie began an 8 year stint as the office manager at Harbor Tower starting in 1970. She was also the Escanaba Housing Director for 12 years. Marjorie finally retired on January 6, 1990 as the Director of Harbor Tower.

Marjorie’s family will receive friends on Thursday, October 25 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Skradski-Boyce Funeral Home in Escanaba. Rosary will be recited at 6:30. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, October 26 at 10:00 AM at St. Anne’s Catholic Church with Rev. Father Mike Steber as celebrant. A luncheon will follow Mass in the church fellowship hall. Marjorie will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Marjorie’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
