Hazel Holm

Died November 21, 2007


Hazel W. Holm, age 92, of Gladstone died Wednesday afternoon, November 21, 2007 at the Christian Park Village in Escanaba where she was a resident.

Hazel was born December 12, 1914 in Stonington the daughter of Waldemar and Hilma (Magnusson) Anderson who where Swedish immigrants to the Stonington area.  She was raised in Ensign and she left the family farm at age 17 and moved to Gladstone.  Hazel worked in Escanaba as a domestic for the William Bonifas family and later for the Oshehns family.  She moved to Chicago at the age of 20 and returned to Gladstone where she worked for the William Marble home in Gladstone.  She also worked as a cook for many years at area restaurants.

Hazel was united in marriage to Elmer Holm in 1938 and they made their home in Gladstone where they raised their three children.

Hazel was an excellent cook and she was asked by then Governor, George Romney to be the cook at the Governors Mansion at Mackinac Island, but declined to remain in Gladstone.

Hazel was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone where she taught Sunday School.  She was a Den mother for many years and was also a member of the Order of Rhunenberg.  Her hobbies included cooking, gardening and fishing.  In recent years she enjoyed playing Bingo.

Survivors include:

1 son: Elmer (Ruth Ann) Holm Jr. of Sparta, WI

2 daughters: Nancy (Dean) Bovin of Gladstone and Sandra (James) Stanton of Manitowac, WI

1 brother: Grover (Pat) Anderson of Gladstone

4 sisters: Thora Greenlund of Gladstone, Jane (Lester) Gardner of Escanaba, Ann Bert of Escanaba, Eileen (Gary) Schultz of Yorba Linda, CA

4 grandchildren: Michael (Sheri) Bovin of Gladstone, Joan (Dan) Bender of Gladstone, Chad (Jenny) Holm of West Salem, WI, Brad Stanton of Manitowac, WI

6 great grandchildren: Linda Jenshak of Lexington, KY, Kristina Jenshak of Gladstone, Daniel Bender of Gladstone, Staci Bovin of Marquette, Brittani Bovin of Grand Rapids, MI, Jadyn Bovin of Gladstone

Numerous nieces and nephews

In addition to her parents and husband Elmer, she was also preceded in death by:

3 sisters: Evelyn Johnson, Rose Erickson and Clara Anderson

5 brothers: Victor, James, Myron,  and infant twins, Axel and Oliver

Hazel’s family will receive friends on Monday from 1:30 to 4:00 PM at the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone.  Funeral services celebrating the life of Hazel W. Holm will follow at 4:00 PM at the First Lutheran Church with Rev. Jonathan Schmidt officiating.  Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall.  Burial will be in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells.
