Lois "Carolyn" Young, 77, of 217 Dakota Avenue, Gladstone, MI passed away Saturday evening, December 15, 2007, at the Christian Park Village where she had been a resident for the past 11 days. She was surrounded by her family.
Carolyn was born on February 10, 1930, in Elwood, Indiana and was the daughter of Max and Ethel (Knotts) Hurd. She attended Anderson High School and graduated in 1948.
The former Carolyn Hurd married Russell Morehouse on September 18, 1949 and moved to Michigan in 1968, where they were both employed by the American Playground Company. On August 24, 1973, she married Edwin H. Young, and together the couple owned and operated Mr. Ed’s Grotto North, located in Escanaba. She so enjoyed the people that came to the restaurant over the years. Edwin preceded her in death in May of 1991. Upon retirement from the restaurant business, Carolyn worked for UPCAP, for ten years, retiring in September of 2007.
Carolyn enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed playing her piano, which she did quite beautifully. Carolyn was a member of the Gladstone American Legion. She loved the rip off tickets and her good luck in winning with them. She was always ready to help or do something for somebody that needed a favor.

8 Grandchildren: Tina Harris, Christen (Scott) Duncan, John Lewandowski, Mark Morehouse, Kara Morehouse, all of Escanaba, MI, Jessica Morehouse of Rapid River, MI, Kurt (Jill) Strasler of Gladstone, MI, and Rachel Strasler of Portland, OR.
9 Great Grandchildren: Sydney, Avery, Matthew, Nicholas, Aiden, Jacob, Samantha, Zachary and Clayton.
3 Sisters: Irene Deeley of Anderson, IN; Ruby (Drew) Miller of Rochester, MN; Jeanette (Robert) Reddin of Anderson, IN
1 Brother: Max Lee (Joyce) Hurd of Phelps, WI
Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and her very special friend "Bill French"
In addition to her parents, Max and Ethel, Carolyn was preceded in death by her first husband, Russell and her second husband, Edwin and two sisters, Helen Marie and Mildred Maxine.
Carolyn’s family will receive friends on Friday from 2:00PM to 4:00PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Gladstone American Legion August Mattson Post #71 Auxiliary rites will follow visitation, at 4:00PM, at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Luncheon will follow at the Gladstone American Legion Hall. The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting Carolyn’s family with arrangements.
