Walter Frederick Nemacheck, 98, died Monday afternoon, March 17, 2008, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming following a short illness.
Walter was born October 16, 1909, at Bessemer, Michigan, the second son of Frank D. and Eleanor (Brooks) Nemacheck. His twin brother, Alton Josiah, died shortly after their birth. He was raised in Bessemer and was a 1927 graduate of A.D. Johnston High School. He continued his education at Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin, graduating in 1932 with a Bachelors degree and major in physics and chemistry.
He returned to Bessemer after graduation and began teaching high school science classes at his alma mater. On August 9, 1938, he married fellow teacher Elizabeth Ethel Rosemurgy at the Bessemer Methodist Church.
Shortly after, he opened “Walt’s Gamble Store” on Highway 2 in Bessemer. After 17 years in the hardware business, he returned to teaching at A.D. Johnston High School, finally retiring in 1969. He and Ethel continued in retirement in Bessemer until 1999 when they moved to Northwoods Assisted Living Center in Escanaba.
Walter was a member of the Bessemer Lions Club, the City of Bessemer Board of Public Works, Wesley United Methodist Church in Ironwood and various business and civic organizations. He enjoyed his family, travel, and working around his house and garden.
He is survived by three sons Fred (Nancy) Nemacheck of Naperville, Illinois, David (Barb) Nemacheck of Gladstone, Bill (Patti) Nemacheck of Marquette, eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel, his parents and his brother, Francis.
Walter’s family will receive friends at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Gladstone on Saturday April 12, 2008 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 p.m. EDT. Services will follow at 5:00 p.m. Saturday at the Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Jackie Roe officiating. Luncheon will follow services in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells Township.
