Lawrence C. Grenier, age 88, of 1215 Wisconsin Avenue; Gladstone passed away on Friday, April 25th, 2008 at the Christian Park Center in Escanaba.
Lawrence was born March 21st, 1920 in Escanaba son of Henry and Alma (Aubin) Grenier, attended St. Anne Parochial School, and later graduated from the Escanaba High School in 1938 where he also excelled on football with the “Escanaba Eskimos.”
Lawrence married the former Dympna A.M. Heric on August 19th, 1941 at St.Anne Church in Escanaba. After their marriage, they relocated to Detroit where he worked for “Timkin Axel” until Lawrence entered military with the U.S. Army during World War II. While serving in the European Theater, Lawrence also fought in the “Battle of the Bulge” near the end of the War. When he was honorably discharged, he returned to Delta County and settled in Gladstone with his family.
Lawrence was employed for “Mead Paper Co.”, for forty and a half years was a member of the Papermakers Union where he served as chief steward, vice-president, and president. In addition he was a member of All Saints Church and American Legion August Mattson Post #71 of Gladstone.
Lawrence enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping but he particularly loved his family gatherings that included his four grandchildren. The “Detroit Red Wings” and the “Detroit Lions” were two of his favorite sports teams. Dancing was another favorite enjoyment that both Lawrence and Dympna participated in.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Raymond, Tony, and Robert Grenier, and by a sister, Eva Atkinson.
In addition to his wife of nearly 67 years, Dympna, Lawrence Grenier’s survivors include:
3 Sons- Lawrence John (Sue) Grenier of Gladstone, Robert Henry Grenier of Wisconsin, Daniel Clayton (Anne) Grenier of Gladstone
1 Brother- Francis (Audrey) Grenier of Escanaba
3 Sisters- Mary Lou (Jerry) Genette of Milwaukee, Mary Ann (Don) Moreau of Pontiac, Betty (Robert) Nicholas of Gladstone
4 Grandchildren- Michael (Lisa) Grenier of Holland, MI, Cathy Grenier of Minnesota, Pamela Sue (Luke) LaPlant of Gladstone, John Paul Grenier of Gladstone,
and nieces and nephews.
The family of Lawrence C. Grenier will receive friends on Tuesday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Military Rites will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. by the Gladstone American Legion. Due to construction at All Saints Church, Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Gladstone with Rev. Fr. Arnold Grambow officiating. Luncheon will follow Mass at the First Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. Burial will be in the Fernwood Cemetery. The Skradski-Boyce Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Grenier family
