OBITUARIES

Muriel Scheuren
Resided in Cornell, MI
Died April 28, 2008

Muriel “Midge” Scheuren, age 88, found peace on Monday April 28, 2008 after a courageous 7 month struggle with brain cancer. She died at the home of her son, Duane Scheuren, where she spent her last months gazing out upon deer fields, tucked under a hand quilted blanket that she had crafted for her grandson 25 years earlier. She was surrounded by her beloved family who cared for and enjoyed every last moment with her.

Muriel Virginia Way was born to Ida (Wery) and Allen Way on February 9, 1920. She graduated from the Escanaba Senior High School in 1938 and was employed by the S & H Stamp Store in Escanaba for many years. She married Morton “Mutt” Scheuren on June 15, 1940. Midge and Mutt built their lives together, along with their house and a large dairy farm (in partnership with his brother Howard and her sister Evelyn) in the Boney Falls area (Cornell).  Muriel kept herself busy caring not only for the calves, but for her own little ones, Ken, Jim and Duane. When she wasn’t tending to the animals (the cows or the boys) she made time to become an active member of the Cornell School PTO, the Cornell Farm Bureau, and a 4-H Leader.  Muriel had a great sense of humor, a quit wit and an adventurous fun-seeking spirit. She loved being outdoors. Muriel and Mutt traveled all over the United States vacationing and site seeing, especially enjoying the tropical breezes of Hawaii. Muriel could ride a snowmobile with the best of them and logged many snow covered miles on her Big Mean Green Machine (John Deere). Muriel was an avid gardener who took great pride in her flower and vegetable patches –which always yielded enough bounty for friends and neighbors to enjoy the “fruits” of her labor. Muriel was a very talented quilter. She created many beautiful quilts in her life time; some which she donated to her beloved church, Holy Family of Flat Rock, or other organizations for fundraisers. Each of her family members received at least one lovingly stitched quilt from Muriel; quilts that will keep them wrapped in her warmth and love forever.  She was very active in the Cornell Seniors Citizens for over 20 years and received special recognition for her many years of volunteer service to the organization.

Muriel is survived by her sons, Kenneth (Mariann) Scheuren of New Berlin, WI, James (Connie) Scheuren of Cornell, MI, and Duane (Pat) Scheuren of Bark River, MI; Eight grandchildren – Cheryl (Mike) Unnone, Scott (Melina Grdadolnik) Scheuren, Mark Scheuren, Mike (Mary Raeder) Scheuren, Jamie Scheuren, Jeff (Charlotte) Scheuren, Matt (Shannon) Scheuren and Eric (Alisa) King; and 6 great grand children – Alan, Victor, Kennedee, Mary Pat, Hunter and Faith; Sister Eunice (Bert) Doutree of Escanaba, Dolores (Charles) Larsen of Gladstone and sister-in-law Lillian Way of Escanaba, along with many cherished nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Morton, her parents Allen and Ida, her sister Evelyn Scheuren, and her brother, Elwood (Cub) Way.

Family will greet friends on Thursday May 1, 2008 at the Skradski-Boyce Funeral Home, 118 South 12th St., Escanaba from 3 to 5:15 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday at 6:00 PM at Holy Family Church in Flatrock with Fr. Jose Maramattam presiding. Luncheon will follow services in the church parish hall.  Burial will be in Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells. In Lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the OSF HOSPICE, 901 N. Lincoln Road, Escanaba, MI.
