June Elegreet

Died September 15, 2008


June Retha Elegreet, age 93, passed away quietly at her home at 1516 Wisconsin Avenue; Gladstone on Monday, September 15th, 2008 with her family at her side.

She was born in Rapid River, Michigan on June 12th, 1915, the daughter of Rueben and Edna (Wolfe) Young. She was raised in Rapid River and graduated from the Rapid River High School in 1933. June was a member of the Rapid River Congregational Church where she taught Sunday School in the early 1930’s.

After her marriage to her husband, Charles F. Elegreet in September of 1934, June moved to Gladstone where she and “Chuck” raised their two children, Dick and Dorothy, and she began attending the Methodist church.

June enjoyed bowling, knitting, crocheting, playing cards of all kinds, and going to the casino. She also enjoyed traveling, visiting 49 states, 7 European countries, Canada, Mexico, and the Bahamas.

June was a life-time member of the Gladstone Yacht Club and the Gladstone American Legion Auxiliary August Matson Post #71 and was a member of the Gladstone Senior Citizens Organization. In addition, she was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and she enthusiastically followed the games of the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Red Wings.

June had friends of all ages and was a joy to be around. Her “vim and vigor” was a hallmark trait of hers and she was an inspiration to all who knew her.

June Elegreet’s survivors include:

1 Son- Richard “Dick” (Mary Sue) Elegreet of the Maywood Shores area of Rapid River

1 Sister-Emerald (Bill) Ocenasek of Chicago, Ill.

4 Grandchildren-John (Elizabeth) Elegreet of Atlanta, GA; Nancy (Paul) Yu of Atlanta, GA; Suzanne (Jay) Mitchell of Fond-du-lac, WI; Retha (Michael) Sandler of Atlanta, GA

10 Great-grandchildren: Nichole (Josh) Patrick of Portland, Oregon; P.J., Mac, and Ben Yu of Atlanta; Katlyn and J.J. Mitchell of Fond du lac, WI; Sopia June and Samual John Elegreet of Atlanta, GA; Lily and Melanie Sandler of Atlanta, GA

Numerous nieces, nephews, including a special niece, Naida Standing of Gladstone and by special friends, Marguerite and Frank Barak, of Gladstone. 

In addition to her parents and her husband, “Chuck”, June was preceded in death by a daughter Dorothy Gereau and her husband Ronald “Bud” Gereau, six brothers; Wayne, William, Allan, Frank, Lynn, and Orville Young, and by 1 sister, Ruby (Ray) Norden.           

The family of June Elegreet will receive friends on Saturday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 2:00 p.m. to 3:35 p.m. with American Legion Auxiliary Rites being recited at 3:45 p.m. Services celebrating June’s life will follow on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home with Rev. Jackie Roe of the Memorial United Methodist Church officiating. Luncheon will follow services at the Gladstone American Legion. Burial will be in the Fernwood Cemetery.

The Elegreet family respectfully requests memorials be directed to the O.S.F. Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the Skradski-Boyce Funeral Homes of Delta County who are assisting the family.
