Fred Herzog
Resided in Rapid River, MI
Died February 4, 2009


Frederick H. Herzog, age 70, of 8073 Squaw Creek 18 Road, Rapid River, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday February 4, 2009 at his home due to an apparent heart attack.

Frederick was born January 14, 1939 in Brampton, the son of Frederick A. and Donna (Hemken) Herzog. Fred was raised in Brampton and was a 1957 graduate of the Gladstone High School. Following graduation, Fred enlisted in the United States Army where he served for six months before returning home to Brampton. Upon his return from the Army and on April 18, 1959, Fred was united in marriage to the former Nancy Kossow in Perkins. He then rejoined the U.S. Army where he was stationed at Ft. Knox, in Kentucky until his honorable discharge. Fred and Nancy eventually moved to Milwaukee where Fred gained employment for American Motor Company. He later acquired a position, in Milwaukee, working construction, as a Foreman, on various building sites.

In 1968 they returned to the U.P. and Fred worked for Harnischfeger Corporation until its closure. Fred than continued his education at Bay De Noc Community College where he received degree’s in Television Repair and Forestry Management. He later worked for the American Playground Corporation until his retirement.

Fred was a skilled woodworker. His hobbies included, making birdhouses and yard ornaments. In addition, Fred enjoyed driving his bulldozer.

In addition to his wife Nancy, survivors include;

2 sons; Fred (Debbie) Herzog of Escanaba; David (Lynn) Herzog of Rapid River

2 daughters; Donna (Rick) Novak of Escanaba; Ardith (Josh) Bordeau of Gladstone

2 sisters; Margaret (Larry) Pausel of New York; Ardith Bartelt of Gladstone, MI

11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Charles.

Fred’s family will receive friends on Monday February 9, 2009 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of Frederick H. Herzog will follow at 3:00 PM with L.L.M. David Mason of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Stonington officiating.
