Emil Edward “Ed” Mauhar, age 74, of 9024 Hwy US 2, passed away Saturday morning March 21, 2009 at the St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba following a lengthy illness.
Emil was born January 23, 1935 on the family farm in Ensign the son of John and Slava (Stemac) Mauhar. Emil was one of eleven children and he attended Ensign school. Ed joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 21 and he served his country in the Navy for 20 years, including the war in Vietnam. Ed was honorably discharged in 1976.
Ed was united in marriage to the former Suzanne June (Beyer) on February 24, 1968 in Royal Oak, MI. Ed and Suzanne returned to Ensign in 1976. He worked for and retired from Mead Paper Company.
Ed was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church in Rapid River, Rapid River American Legion Post #301 and the Escanaba V.F.W. His hobbies included hunting, tinkering with his tractor, working in his garage and farming. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and he treasured serving them cookies and juice.

Daughters: Jennifer (Melvin) Anderson of Gladstone and Susan Mauhar of DePere, WI.
Son: Edward (Lori Sundling) Mauhar of St. Jacques
Daughter-in-law: Deanna Mauhar of Rapid River
Grandchildren: Eric Mauhar of Escanaba and Jason, Troy and Cameron Mauhar of Rapid River.
Brother: William Mauhar of Gladstone
Sisters: Mary Dominick of Perkins and Anne Mauhar of Powers
Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Suzanne on December 17, 1987 and 7 brothers and sisters.
According to Ed’s wishes, private visitation and services were held on Monday March 23, 2009 at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone with Deacon Rod Groleau officiating. Burial will be in the Rapid River Cemetery in the Spring.
