Mae Miller

Mae I. Miller, age 89, of 6177 I Road, Escanaba, MI passed away Easter Sunday April 12, 2009 at the Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba where she currently was a resident.
Mae was born November 7, 1919 in Rock, MI the daughter of Charles and Mary (Zangle) Sarasin.   Mae was raised in Rock until the age of 8 when her family moved to Gladstone.  Mae attended Gladstone Public Schools, and later in life she was a 1980 graduate of the Escanaba Community Schools.  She also attended classes at Bay De Noc Community College.
 
Prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army, Mae assembled telescopes and bombsights for the U.S. Army and Navy from 1942 to 1943 for the Bell and Howell Company.  She then served in the U.S. Army during WW II from 1943 to 1946 where she served with the Medical Corps stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey.  Upon her honorable discharge in 1946 she received the U.S. Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.
 
Mae was united in marriage to James C. Miller on November 4, 1946.  They made their home in several states prior to James death in 1974.  Mae returned to Escanaba in 1974.
 
Mae’s working career included working at Stella’s Café in Gladstone from 1946 to 1954, the Red Owl Store in Gladstone from 1954 to  1959, Jitney Jungle in Slidell, LA from 1961 to 1962, Rich’s Supermarket in Williamsburg, VA and the HEB Store in Copperas Cove and Gatesville TX.
 
Mae was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Gladstone and she enjoyed playing cards, sewing, traveling, cooking and embroidering.  Mae’s family was very important to her.  She especially treasured spending time with her 2 grandchildren and playing games with them.

Son: Terry (Diane) Miller of Escanaba
 
2 grandchildren: Carissa and Calvin Miller of Escanaba
 
Sister: Elizabeth (Albert) Kurth of Soo Hill, MI
 
Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins
 
In addition to her parents and husband James, Mae was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Gordon and Carl, and 3 sisters, Helen Courtney, Ellen Makie and Dorothy Hernke.
 
Mae’s family will receive friends on Thursday, April 16, 2009 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone.  Funeral services celebrating the life of Mae I. Miller will follow at 7:00 PM at the Skradski Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Harmon of the Central United Methodist Church officiating.  Burial will be in Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells.
