Luella Jane (Stasewich) Rose, 77, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Marquette General Hospital.
She was born Oct. 10, 1931, the daughter of John and Ella (Wunder) Stasewich. Her parents both passed away during her teenage years, and she helped raise eight of her brothers and sisters from that time through adulthood. She was a 1949 graduate of Escanaba High School and was a member of the National Honor Society.
Luella married James A. Rose on April 23, 1955, in Escanaba. They raised six of their own children along with Luella's brothers and sisters who lived with them at the time.
Luella was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church. She was a member of the church choir and parish council. She also served as a religious education coordinator and CCD teacher for many years. She was a member of the St. Thomas Church Ladies Guild and Bishop Baraga Circle. She served on the Holy Name School Board of Education, Holy Name Home and School Association, and volunteered many hours to the school and her church.
Through the years Luella worked as a cook at the Highland Golf Club and as an attendant at the Delta County Historical Society Museum. She was a co-founder and past president of the Northside Citizens Pollution Review Committee, chairwoman of the Delta County Cancer Crusade, and a member of the Delta County Historical Society. She had been a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout den mother when her children were young. She enjoyed playing dartball and had played in the tavern and the church leagues for 43 years. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and reading.
In addition to her parents, Luella was preceded in death by three of her sisters, Mary Ann (Stasewich) Little, Patricia (Stasewich) Madsen, and Rita (Stasewich) Eubank, and two of her brothers, Robert and Richard Stasewich.
Luella is survived by her husband James, sons James (Ann) Rose, Washington Island, WI, Mark (Jean) Rose, Escanaba, Michael (Kerry-Ann) Rose, St. Paul, MN, and David (Debbie) Rose, Escanaba; two daughters, Karen (David) Wils and Lori Rose, both of Escanaba; brothers James (Janet) Stasewich, Escanaba, and Larry (Mary Ann) Krause, Rapid River; sisters Nancy (Allen) Hendrickson and Sandy (Joseph) Verbrigghe, Escanaba; brothers-in-law Roger Eubank of Escanaba and Skip Little of Illinois along with sister-in-law Janet Stasewich of Illinois; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation, for Luella, will be held Monday, April 6, 2009, from 1PM to 3:30PM, at the Skradski-Boyce Funeral Home, in Escanaba. Mass of Christian Burial Services will follow visitation, at 4PM, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church with Rev. Fr. Rick Courier officiating. Luncheon will follow in the St. Thomas Parish Hall. Committal will take place at Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Holy Name Central Grade School or the American Stroke Association. The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are in care of arrangements.
