Lloyd Nyberg

Died January 25, 2010


Lloyd A. Nyberg, age 89, of 1423 Montana Avenue, Gladstone, passed away Monday morning January 25, 2010 at the Lakeview Assisted Living Center in Gladstone where he was currently a resident.
 
Lloyd was born April 2, 1920 the son of Carl and Hannah (Olson) Nyberg who were Swedish immigrants to Gladstone.  Carl was a blacksmith in Gladstone.
 
Lloyd was raised in Gladstone where he was a 1938 graduate of Gladstone High School.  Following graduation he attended the Dunwoody Industrial Institute in Minneapolis, MN, graduating in 1940.  Upon graduation he worked for the Beloit Iron Works in Beloit, WI. He served his country in the U.S. Navy as a Machinist Mate where he was stationed on the USS Conway (DD 507) in the South Pacific during WW II.  He returned to Beloit where he continued to work for Beloit Iron works until he returned to Gladstone.
 
Lloyd was united in marriage to the former Velma Mae Cox in 1943 and they made their home in Gladstone where they raised their 4 children.
 
Lloyd worked for P & H in Escanaba for 19 years and later for Marble Arms.  He formally was a co-owner of Hoegh Pet Casket Company in Gladstone.  In 1955 he founded Bay de Noc Lure Company in Gladstone.  Lloyd never retired and he continued manufacturing fishing lures “The Swedish Pimple” through October 2009.
 
Lloyd was an avid gardener and reader.  He enjoyed spending time at camp Nola with his friends, and  loved his Detroit sports teams, including the Lions, Red Wings and Tigers.  He was a strong supporter of the Gladstone Braves sports teams, and he enjoyed traveling to see his family participate in various sports.
 
Lloyd was an active member of the United Evangelical Covenant Church in Gladstone where he served several years on the Church Board, Building Committee and  also served as an usher.
 
Lloyd will be remembered as a loving husband, wonderful father, devoted grandfather and great grandfather and generous and loving friend.  His passion in life was to make other people happy.  When he saw a need, he was always quick to respond to help in any way he could.
 
Survivors include:

3 daughters: Linda Ketchum of Fort Myers, FL; Susan (Dr. Gary) Clague of Royal Oak, MI; Barbara (Ronald) Ludwig of Ann Arbor, MI
 
1 son: David (Patti) Nyberg of Gladstone
 
9 grandchildren: Jeffrey (Anniken) Ketchum, Kimberly (Rev. Martin) Hawley, Kristin (Dr. Chad) Conlin, Aimee Ludwig, Jonathan and Brian Clague, David, Erik and Kaitlin Nyberg.
 
8 great grandchildren: Timothy, Noah, Jacob and Isaac Ketchum, Jason, Craig and Stephen Hawley, and Jillian Conlin.
 
Brother: Carl Nyberg of Gladstone
 
4 step-daughters and families: Sharon (Rev. Willy) Sills, Jack Moore, Candy (Ron) Vogel and Robin (Dave) Gove.
 
Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Sweden
 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his 1st  wife, Velma Mae in 1973 and his 2nd wife, Adeline in 2002, siblings, Stanley, Esther, Paul, Ellen, Loyd and Inez, son-in-law, Rev. Ronald Ketchum.
 
Lloyd leaves behind a strong legacy of Christian Service & Faith and compassion for others.  His unique sense of humor, pride for his Swedish heritage and devotion to his family will be sadly missed. 
 
The Nyberg family would especially like to thank the staff of Lakeview Assisted Living for their excellent care and concern.
 
Lloyd’s family will receive friends on Saturday January 30, 2010 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon at the United Evangelical Covenant Church in Gladstone.  Funeral services celebrating the life of Lloyd A. Nyberg will follow at 12:00 noon at the church with Rev. Nathan Langager officiating.  Luncheon will follow in the United Evangelical Covenant Church Fellowship Hall.  Burial with Military Rites will be conducted in the Spring at the Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone.  The Nyberg family respectfully requests memorial contributions be directed to the United Evangelical Covenant Church.  You can express your sympathy to the Nyberg family, or to leave a memory tribute about Lloyd by using the form below.
