Oliver Turan

Oliver J. “Ollie” Turan, age 72, of Escanaba, passed away at home in his sleep on Tuesday February 9th, 2010. Oliver was born March 23rd, 1937 in Nahma and was raised in Rapid River and was a graduate of the Rapid River High School.  For over the last 20 years, Oliver has resided in Escanaba.

Oliver was a devout Roman Catholic and a member of the St. Joseph/ St. Patrick Church of Escanaba.  Though being physically disabled since birth, Oliver had a keen intellect, and was well versed and very knowledgeable on a number of topics, including computers which interested him immensely. 

Through the years, he built a number of devices and adapted or fashioned many tools to make his mobility easier and also to make his life more trouble-free with his physical limitations.

Oliver was known for his communication abilities, quick wit, and humor.  Many people will miss their annual Christmas greeting phone call from Oliver as well as other telephone acknowledgements from him on their birthday or on other special occasions.  In years past, he had five dogs, all named “Rexy” and the current “Rexy” gave Oliver much enjoyment.

Oliver Turan’s survivors include care-givers and friends, especially Aurelie Martin of Escanaba, and Rosemary Hickman of Rapid River.  Many friends also survive Oliver which includes Roxanna Schramm.  Oliver had a number of cousins and Mary (George) Anderson of Rapid River was a cousin who cared for his well-being. An aunt, Violet Sargent, of Escanaba additionally survives Oliver.

Visitation for Oliver Turan will be  held on Friday at the Skradski-Boyce Funeral Home in Escanaba from 3:00p.m. to 5:15p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at St. Joseph/St. Patrick Church with Rev. Fr. Eric Olson officiating.  Luncheon will follow Mass in the parish hall. Burial will be in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery; Wells.
