Richard “Dick” Fyhr, age 75, of 1225 Superior Avenue, Gladstone, passed away Thursday evening June 24, 2010 at his home following a brief illness.
Richard was born May 19, 1935 in Michigan City, Indiana the son of Oscar and Matilda (Peterson) Fyhr. Following graduation from high school, Dick earned a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. While at Purdue, he served in the R.O.T.C.
Upon completion of his degree, Dick served his country with the U.S. Army in Korea. Here he devoted much of his time to the Sung Ae Woon orphanage in Seoul where he met his wife, Mi Suk Chung. They were united in marriage in Korea on September 29, 1964 before returning to Michigan City, IN following his honorable discharge as a First Lieutenant.
Dick’s Electrical Engineering career included managing the set up and operation of a new mill at the Gary Steel Mills, Head of Maintenance at Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming and as an Electrician at MJ Electric in Marquette. In 1978 Dick and Mi Suk struck out on their own, purchasing and operating Fyhr’s Party Store while raising his family in Ishpeming until his retirement in 2004. Upon retirement they relocated to Gladstone.
Dick enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at his camp on Lake Michigan. He was a hard working provider, devoted husband, and loving father who will be sadly missed by many.
In addition to his wife Mi Suk, survivors include;
2 sons: Kevin Fyhr of Delavan, WI and Keith Fyhr of Loves Park, IL
Sister: Nancy (Chuck) Iler of Michigan City, IN
Granddaughter: Elisia Fyhr of Bamberg, Germany
Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins
In addition to his parents, his brother, Arnold, and 2 sisters, Junette and Alice, preceded Dick in death.
According to Dick’s wishes, private graveside funeral services were held at Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone. The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Escanaba and Gladstone are assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, the Fyhr family respectfully request that memorial contributions be made to the American Stroke Association or the Beacon House in Marquette, MI in loving memory of Dick.
The Fyhr family wishes to express their thanks to the staff at Marquette General and St Francis Hospitals, Christian Park Rehabilitation Center and the wonderful folks at the Beacon House for being there when we needed them most. It was a difficult time for us and we cherish each additional day we were able to be with him. A special thank you to Dr. Kahn at Marquette General for giving us hope while giving Dick a fighting chance and one more month with his family.
